Beginning with an interlude of moody, shimmering synthesizers and mournful strings, “You Shut Down” ignites with a grinding, saturated bass guitar line and echoing guitars that could power onto any Xymox album.

While the song pushes post-punk and gothic, “You Shut Down” boasts rousing vocals and layered, harmonized choruses that harken to Peter Murphy, New Order, or The Church infused with a 60s vocal band. The lyrics, at first dark, then affirming, deal with finding strength and not shutting down in the face of adversity, broken relationships, and the innate pressure to conform. The song rallies around an uplifting chorus of “You should go down fighting,” delivered by both vocalists; then converges into a dizzying unison crescendo, before fading into contemplation.

“You Shut Down” was mastered by Paul Gomersall, legendary recording engineer for Trevor Horn’s ZTT label, engineer for Howard Jones’ U.S. #1 single “No One Is to Blame”, and for artists including Kate Bush, Genesis, Echo & the Bunnymen, Propaganda, Chapterhouse, and Prefab Sprout.

Built around a driving bass line that would feel at home on a Duran Duran or Peter Murphy album, “Afterlife” shimmers with layered, harmonized vocals and lush synthesizers. Boasting a modernized but deeply authentic 80’s sound, lyrically “Afterlife” explores the electric highs, shattering lows, and profound longing of living in a foreign land.

This is a new, ambitious recording of “Afterlife”. The original recording was released on the Global Vision indie compilation “For My Urban Life” and sold several thousand copies in the underground Tokyo music scene.

“Afterlife” was mastered by Paul Gomersall, recording engineer for Trevor Horn’s renowned label ZTT, engineer for Howard Jones’ U.S. #1 single “No One Is to Blame”, and recording engineer for artists that include Kate Bush, Genesis, Echo & the Bunnymen, Propaganda, Chapterhouse, and Prefab Sprout.

“Fluid Japan’s “Afterlife” is a great song; deep in sound and meditative.” – Satomi Hayashi, radio personality, Feather Clouds radio program on Tokyo FM 83.6 Urayasu

“Among the stand-outs are the electronic explorations of [Fluid Japan’s] “Afterlife” – Tokyo Classified / Metropolis magazine review of “For My Urban Life” compilation CD

“Afterlife. One of my favorite songs ever; shivers down the spine.” – Jan Linton, recording artist who has collaborated and recorded with Thomas Dolby/Thompson Twins/David Bowie bassist Matthew Seligman, regular Brian Eno guitarist Leo Abrahams, and Porcupine Tree/Japan keyboardist Richard Barbieri.

“I FUCKING love this! It's like if Peter Murphy and Depeche Mode made a baby.” – Steph, Fluid Japan fan

All of His Reactions

Fluid Japan

“All of His Reactions” is a melodic and rhythmic electronic track. Narratively, it weighs the leaps in technology of the modern world versus the needs and limits of our human spirit.

It’s a theme that’s even more relevant today than in any science fiction book or movie.
